A Happy Day

Happiness if I am right, lies in two things: being exactly where one belongs – but what official can say that of himself? – and especially, performing comfortably the most commonplace functions, that is having enough sleep and not having new boots, that pinch. When the 720 minutes of the twelve-hour day pass without any special annoyance that can be called a happy day.

Das Glück, wenn mir recht ist, liegt in zweierlei: darin, daß man ganz da steht, wo man hingehört (aber welcher Beamte kann das von sich sagen), und zum zweiten und besten in einem behaglichen Abwickeln des ganz Alltäglichen, also darin, daß man ausschlafen hat und daß die neuen Stiefel nicht drücken. Wenn einem die 720 Minuten eines zwölfstündigen Tages ohne besondere Ärger vergehen, so läßt sich von einem glücklichen Tage sprechen.
